Dual Credit Accelerated OYAP Program


Students in their last semester of high school, can earn their high school credits, register as an apprentice, complete all or part of their Level One Apprenticeship schooling in this specific trade, and earn hours/competencies towards their apprenticeship.

This program is intended to assist secondary students in their final year of high school with an interest and a demonstrated aptitude in this specific trade to complete their OSSD and to support their successful transition to college and apprenticeship programs.  Students must:

  • be a minimum of 16 years of age 
  • earned all compulsory courses required for an OSSD
    • completed one of the following math courses:  MAP4C, MCT4C, MHF4U
    • completed a co-op or work experience previously in the interested skilled trade sector
  • completed all required community service hours
  • completed OSSLT requirements
  • excellent problem solving skills, attendance and commitment and passion for the trades

Please see your Co-op Department for detailed information sheets on the Individual Dual Credit Accelerated OYAP programs.  Some general information for each program is available on the accordian chart below.

  • Through Co-op, students will earn up to 4 (four) Co-op credits towards their OSSD. 
  • Through Dual Credit, students may earn 1 - 3 additional elective dual credits towards their OSSD.

*note - programs and seat allocations to the board change year to year - please check with your co-op and guidance departments to confirm the program running for each school year.

Automotive Service Technician 310S

Does working on cars work into your career plans? Students will combine theoretical classes and hands-on labs to learn the basics of automotive service including how to diagnose, service and repair motor vehicles.

Course Delivery:  Hands-on opportunity, where students begin and earn their Level 1 Automotive Service Technician Apprenticeship Certification.

Auto Body and Collision Damage Repairer 310B

Does working on cars work into your career plans? Students will combine theoretical classes and hands-on labs to learn the basics of  repairs and/or replacing frame and structural components, mechanical components, interior components, electrical components, plastic and composite panels and sheet metal panels.

Course Delivery:  Hands-on opportunity, where students begin and earn their Level 1 Autobody Apprenticeship Certification

Do you smell what's baking?
Students will learn sanitation, safety & equipment; breads; cookies and cake making and decorating as well as theory, nutrition and kitchen calculations.

General Carpenter 403A

Are you ready to become a Carpenter?

Students will begin to develop the skills of an Apprentice General Carpenter including: using hand and power tools; calculating and layout; millwork and joinery; erecting foundations, steel and wood framing; interior and exterior finishing; install doors and windows; build stairs and welding.

Course Delivery:  Hands-on learning where students begin and earn their Level 1 Carpentry Apprenticeship Certification.

Child and Youth Worker 620A

Are you interested in working with children and families?

Child and Youth Worker works to improve the physical, emotional, intellectual and social development of vulnerable children, youth and families. They focus on the growth and development of children and youth based on direct, day-to-day work with children and youth in their environment and develop relationships with children, their families, their communities and other inter-disciplinary team members. 

Course Delivery:  Hands-on opportunity, where students begin and earn their Level 1 Child and Youth Worker Apprenticeship Certification.

Construction Craft Worker 450A

Demolition and Construction?  Construction craft workers (CCW) erect and dismantle concrete forms, scaffolding, ramps, catwalk, shoring and barricades required at construction sites.

They mix, pour and spread materials such as concrete and asphalt. They are employed by construction, demolition, utilities,and civil and engineering construction companies.

Course Delivery:    Hands on delivery where students will earn learn Level 1 Certification of Apprenticeship in Construction Craft Worker.

Are you shocked by the great jobs in the trades?

Students will learn to calculate voltage, current, resistance, and power in electrical circuits; differentiate between circuits; install common devices; identify & determine appropriate usage of common wiring materials; and identify common distribution systems & service entrances in residential units.

Course Delivery:  Hands-on opportunity, where students begin and earn their Level 1 Electrician: Construction and Maintenance Apprenticeship Certification.

Interior Finishing Systems Training Centre (IFSTA)

Drywall:  Acoustic and Lather 451A

Can you hear me?

A drywall, acoustic and lathing applicator erects exterior structural steel studs and sheeting, shaft wall systems, installs and finishes lath and drywall, partition  wall and furring, ceiling systems and access flooring types as well as applies thermal and sound insulation.

Course Delivery:  Hands-on opportunity, where students begin and earn their Level 1 Drywall:  Acoustic and Lather Apprenticeship Certification.

Do you want to get floored 
Students will begin their training learning how to plan?, design, install and repair various types of interior flooring including: carpet, hardwood, laminate, linoleum, vinyl and other resilient floor coverings in residential, commercial, industrial and institutional buildings.

Course Delivery:  Hands-on learning where students begin and earn their Level 1 Floor Covering Installer Apprenticeship Certification.

Are you interested in colour techniques, styling and cutting hair?  Students will combine theoretical classes and hands-on labs to learn the basics of sanitization techniques, hairstyling, haircutting, colouring and perming.

Does working on Trucks and large motorized vehicles work into your career plans? Students will combine theoretical classes and hands-on labs to learn the basics of truck and coach service including how to diagnose, service and repair large motor vehicles.

Course Delivery:  Hands-on opportunity, where students begin and earn their Level 1 Automotive Service Technician Apprenticeship Certification.

How to Register

To register, students need to complete the following steps:

  • Pre-select four credit co-op for Semester two in your graduating year on My Pathway Planner and speak with their home-school guidance counsellor and co-op teacher.
  • Ensure that you have completed your compulsory courses, OSSLT and community service hours before the beginning of this program in semester two.
  • Attend the orientation session in the fall, Complete the application process.  Interviews take place the semester prior to beginning the program.
