What is Accelerated OYAP?
This program is designed for students in their last semester of high school who are interested in a skilled trade.
Accelerated Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (Accelerated OYAP) lets students begin their apprenticeship pathway while completing their Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Students can work towards becoming a certified journeyperson by combining classroom learning with workplace experience.
What does the program look like?
Students in the program:
- Earn high school cooperative education credits.
- Register as an apprentice.
- Complete all or part of their Level One Apprenticeship schooling by attending a Training Delivery Agency for eight to nine weeks (depending on the program).
- Earn a full semester of work experience through cooperative education
- Are mentored by a journeyperson who coaches, supervises and supports them as they develop technical and transferable skills.
- Earn hours and/or competencies towards their apprenticeship.

Who is Accelerated OYAP for?
This program is designed for students in their last year of high school who have a strong interest in the skilled trades and enjoy hands-on learning.
The program is designed to help students complete their Ontario Secondary School Diploma and to support their successful transition to college and apprenticeship programs.
To be eligible, students must:
- Be graduating Grade 12 students and be at least 16 years of age.
- Have completed all of their compulsory courses for graduation.
- Have completed 40 hours of community service and OSSLT requirements
- Be registered in a four-credit cooperative education program in Semester 2 of Grade 12.
- Have related technical, cooperative education and/or work experience.
- Have a good work ethic and a strong interest in the skilled trades.
Participating in Accelerated OYAP does not limit future options. Students can continue to college, further apprenticeship training, or other pathways after graduation.

When and how do I apply?
Students apply in early November for the following semester.
To register, students must:
- Pre-select four credit co-op for Semester two in your graduating year on My Pathway Planner.
- Speak with your guidance counsellor and co-op teacher.
- Ensure you have completed your compulsory courses, OSSLT and community service hours before the start of semester two.
- Attend the fall orientation session and complete the application process. Interviews take place the semester before beginning the program.
- Register online to attend the virtual information night.
Application due date is Friday, November 7, 2025.

Frequently Asked Questions
There is no cost to attend the training programs. Students in the program can borrow books, tools and personal protective equipment at no cost (if needed). Transportation subsidies are also available.
Students are supported and monitored through co‑op structures, including health and safety expectations.
No. Accelerated OYAP is designed to open doors, not close them. Students can continue on to apprenticeship, college or other post‑secondary pathways after graduation. The skills and experience gained through this program are valuable and transferable, even if a student’s plans change in the future.
No. Students do not need to have everything figured out. Accelerated OYAP is a great opportunity for students who are interested in the skilled trades and want to explore this pathway while still in high school, with the support of their school and trained professionals.
Yes. Students are supported throughout the program by their cooperative education teachers, Training Delivery Agencies, workplace supervisors and certified journeypersons. Students receive guidance, supervision and mentorship as they learn both in the classroom and on the job.
No. Students are mentored by experienced journeypersons who model skills, explain processes, and support learning in a safe and structured environment. The focus is on learning by doing, with appropriate supervision and coaching.

Students do not need to be experts. They need a willingness to learn and a strong work ethic.
