Safety in YRDSB Schools

Last updated on

Dear families,

We know that following the horrific terrorism and violence in Israel that began over the weekend and has continued to evolve over the course of the week, many in our school communities have concerns about safety both in communities and schools across York Region. You may see York Region District School Board’s (YRDSB)  initial statement, which includes community resources and tips for families to support your child.

We are aware that there have been concerns raised regarding safety, particularly related to tomorrow, October 13, 2023. YRDSB is in ongoing communications with York Regional Police (YRP) and YRP have issued a statement regarding these concerns. As noted by York Regional Police, at this time there is no identified credible threat. If you have specific safety or security questions, concerns or information, we encourage you to contact YRP toll free at 1-866-876-5423. In case of an emergency, always call 911.

Within YRDSB schools, well-trained educators and other caring professionals staff our schools and workplaces, creating safe, welcoming and inclusive learning and working environments for our students and staff members. YRDSB continues to closely follow the advice of YRP related to community and school safety. Based on this advice, on Friday, October 13, 2023, schools will continue with their normal operations and schedules.

There are many safety measures in place in schools and workplaces, developed in consultation with York Regional Police and the Ministry of Education. The safety of students, staff, families and community members is jointly our priority and, in partnership, we continue to take all reasonable safety precautions.

YRDSB staff members have been provided with resources and materials to support the emotional needs of students, as well as their own emotional needs during this very difficult time.

If you have concerns about your child, we encourage you to reach out to your child’s school to access support.
