YRDSB Receives Report on Anti-Asian Racism

Last updated on

At the end of May, our Board received a report on anti-Asian racism from Dr. Reid from the University of Toronto and Dr. Ardavan Eizadirad of Wilfrid Laurier University.

Dr. Reid and Dr. Eizadirad consulted with the Asian community of York Region to gather their lived experiences. They consulted with students, families, staff and community members who identify as Asian and invited them to complete surveys and attend virtual focus groups to provide their feedback.

The feedback provided was compiled into a report that will be used to inform the work of our Dismantling Hate and Oppression Framework (DHOF) that is currently in development in partnership with ReiDefine. The overarching goals of the DHOF are to create a shared understanding of anti-hate, anti-racism and anti-oppression. Through collaborative community engagement, we will achieve and accelerate progress towards our shared goals of equity and inclusivity across YRDSB.

The recommendations from Dr. Reid and Dr. Eizadirad will be used to inform the action items of the DHOF.

We thank Dr. Reid and Dr. Eizadirad for their comprehensive report and recommendations and remain committed to the work of dismantling anti-Asian hate, fostering belonging and creating safer spaces for Asian members of the YRDSB community.
