Elementary and Secondary Occasional (Daily Supply) Teacher

An Occasional Teacher (OT) is a teacher covering daily supply teaching assignments.

The Elementary and Secondary Occasional teacher (OT) job postings are ongoing job postings and may be activated/reactivated at any time throughout the 2025/2026 school year, as hiring is determined by system needs.   

If you are successful through the hiring process, you must be visible on the public registry and in Good Standing with the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) and available to work immediately to be placed onto the Elementary or Secondary Occasional Teaching Roster.

Elementary Occasional Teacher (OT)

Important Information:

  • To be considered for Elementary Occasional Teaching, you must have qualifications in Primary, Junior, and/or Intermediate.
  • The required number of days to remain on the Elementary OT Roster is subject to the availability of assignments, an Occasional Teacher must work a minimum of thirty (30) FTE instructional days per school year to remain on the OT Roster the following year.
  • If you are not currently a member in Good Standing with the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) (e.g. STATUS -  Inactive Non Practising due to Non Payment of Fees), your application may be considered although you would not be eligible to participate in the Selection Process or added to the Occasional Teacher Roster until membership is confirmed.
  • If you are applying to both Elementary and Secondary Occasional Teaching at YRDSB, you will only be eligible to be on one (1) of the two (2) Occasional Teaching Rosters.  Therefore, it is important that you prioritize which list you prefer (Elementary or Secondary) as once you accept a position on the Occasional Teacher Roster, your application will be inactivated from the other teacher job posting(s).
  • In the application process you will be prompted to provide at least three (3) professional, supervisory teaching references (including full name, position title, work location/organization, and email address) in the job posting screening section of the online application.   We do not contact references prior to practicum (written submission)/interview. 

 

Secondary Occasional Teacher (OT)

Important Information:

  • Our current high need areas include Business, Computer Science, Technological Studies, and French.
  • To remain on the Secondary OT Roster Occasional Teachers must have been actively employed by the Board in the secondary panel for a minimum of 20 full-time equivalent days during the previous school year to retain their position on the Secondary Occasional Teacher Roster.
  • To be considered for Secondary Occasional Teaching, you must have a minimum of  qualifications in both Intermediate and Senior. The current requirements include qualifications in Intermediate and Senior in two (2) subject areas (e.g. I/S - subject area #1 & I/S - subject area #2). Requirements may change based on system needs.
  • If you are not currently a member in Good Standing with the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) (e.g. STATUS -  Inactive – Non Practicing due to Non Payment of Fees), your application may be considered although you would not be eligible to participate in the Selection Process or added to the Occasional Teacher Roster until membership is confirmed.
