About the Program


The ESL program provides students an opportunity​​ to:

  • begin their secondary studies early
  • add to their credit summary, or
  • experience the Canadian classroom by participating in a summer credit course led by an Ontario Certified Teacher

 

Program Length & Duration


It is designed for ESL international students at a beginner to intermediate level of English who want to strengthen their language skills. 

  • 4-week, 110 hour, intensive program (100% participation is mandatory)
  • 8:45 am to 3:30 pm, daily
  • July 27 to August 21, 2026

 

Eligibility


  • Students aged 14 to 18 years of age
  • Students entering Grade 9 to 12, September 2026
  • new international students to Ontario, entering private/public
  • international students visiting Canada for a short period of time
  • beginner and intermediate English level participants (an assessment will be conducted in June 2026 to confirm ESL course placements)

 

Location: Education Support Centre, 39 Dunning Ave, Aurora, ON

Fee: (includes registration, program fee, and medical insurance)

  • $1,300.00 - New student enrolled in YRDSB beginning September 2026
  • $1,980.00 - Non-YRDSB Student

Emergency Medical Insurance - Coverage begins the Saturday before the start of the program. 

  • YRDSB students arriving before this date will require additional insurance.
  • Non-YRDSB students arriving before this date, or remaining after the end date will require additional insurance. 

An English assessment will be conducted before the start of the program to confirm ESL course level placement.

About the Program


The Summer English & Math Institute (SEMI) is an immersive learning and summer camp program that integrates English language development and mathematics learning. The program is available for a minimum of 2 weeks and up to 4 weeks, and is open to:

  • visiting international students, age 10 to 13, entering grades 5 to 8 in September 2026
  • individuals and groups
  • beginner to intermediate English language speakers

The program provides a dynamic learning and cultural experience in a local camp environment. Students would participate in approximately 90 minutes of guided literacy and numeracy activities, supported by program staff. The remainder of the day includes a variety of camp activities and program electives. 

As part of the York Region District School Board Summer Institute, programming includes a range of academic, recreational, and athletic experiences with connections to the Ontario Curriculum.

Students may choose from up to 10 program electives, depending on availability at their selected location.
