About University

University can be a great option for students who enjoy learning, researching ideas, solving problems and exploring subjects in greater depth.

Ontario universities offer a wide range of programs that can help prepare students for many careers and future educational opportunities. Whether you are interested in science, business, health care, engineering, social sciences, arts or technology, there are many pathways to explore.

As you research programs, think about your interests, strengths and future goals, and explore how different areas of study connect to careers and opportunities after graduation.

What Is University?

University programs focus on developing academic knowledge, critical thinking, research and problem-solving skills.

Students take courses within a chosen area of study while often having opportunities to explore related subjects and interests.

Most students begin by pursuing a bachelor's degree, which can lead to employment, professional programs or further studies.

Review Admission Requirements

Admission requirements vary by university and program. Taking time to review requirements early can help you make informed course selections and keep your options open.

Before you apply, check:

  • recommended courses that may strengthen your application
  • admission average ranges
  • supplemental application requirements
  • auditions, portfolios, interviews or questionnaires (if required)

Many university programs require six Grade 12 U or M courses, including specific prerequisite courses. Requirements vary by program and institution.

Always check the university website for the most current admission requirements and program details. If you need help with your research, please make an appointment to see your Guidance Counsellor.

English Language Proficiency Requirements

If your first language is not English, you may be required to write an English language proficiency test as one of the requirements for admission to an Ontario university. Check the university websites for information on English Language Requirements specific to your college or university.

The most common tests are TOEFL - the Test of English as a Foreign Language and Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT).
