College and University Pathways

Explore Post-Secondary Options

College and university are two common pathways after high school. Both can help you develop knowledge, skills and experience that support your future career goals.

As you review your Individual Pathways Plan (IPP), take time to explore programs, learn about admission requirements, research careers and think about the type of learning environment that is the best fit for you.

There is no single path to success. Many students choose college, university or a combination of both through transfer and collaborative programs.

College

College programs typically focus on practical, career-oriented learning that prepares students for a specific profession or industry. Colleges offer many types of programs, including:

  • Certificate programs
  • Diploma programs
  • Advanced diploma programs
  • Bachelor's degree programs (just like university)

University

University programs focus on developing knowledge, research, critical thinking and analytical skills within a chosen area of study.

Programs may include:

  • Bachelor's degrees
  • Professional degrees
  • Graduate studies
  • Co-op opportunities

Students can often explore different areas of interest before specializing in a major.

Did you know? Students can also move between college and university programs. Check out the Ontario Post-Secondary Transfer Guide. Some schools also offer joint college-university programs.

How Do I Choose the Right Pathway?

As you explore your options, focus on three important questions.

Think about:

  • Your interests
  • Your strengths
  • Your learning style
  • Subjects you enjoy
  • Your future goals

Talk with your family, teachers and guidance counsellor to help identify programs and careers that may be a good fit.

Research careers that interest you and consider:

  • What the job involves
  • Required education or training
  • Workplace settings
  • Future opportunities

Learning about careers can help you identify the programs that support your goals.

Take time to explore:

  • College programs
  • University programs
  • Joint and collaborative programs
  • Campus tours and open houses
  • Virtual information sessions
  • Student support services

The more you explore, the more confident you'll feel about your next steps.
