Board Improvement Plan for Math

To support the learning and teaching of math, YRDSB has developed a boardwide Math Strategy​ and identified opportunities for action to improve students’ fundamental math skills. 

Actions taken in 2018-19 to support student development of fundament​al math skills include:

  • Professional Learning Networks for administrators and teachers

  • A dedicated Professional Activity day on Focusing on the Fundamentals of Math

  • After school learning opportunities

  • Partnerships with Canadian educational researchers

  • Resources for school professional libraries

  • Access to online resources for families

Every elementary and secondary school was involved in one of 28 Math Networks that consisted of three full-day learning sessions and time in-between to implement the learning within the school context. Elementary teachers also engaged in deep content learning with Canadian researcher, Dr. Marian Small, while secondary teachers engaged in content learning with researchers from the University of Waterloo and Simon Fraser University.

Surveys were used to monitor educator implementation of learning. Teachers reported increases in every measure and administrators reported increases in almost every measure based on pre-learning and post-learning surveys. Additionally, teachers applied their new learning, then monitored and shared the impact on student achievement. 

Math success for all students requires a strong partnership between home and school. To support families in connecting with math learning happening at schools, the math page on the board’s public site was updated with overviews of what students learn in each grade or course and resources for engaging in math at home. There was a 237% increase in the number of visits to the math page in the 2018-2019 school year as compared to the previous school year. 


On EQAO Assessments of M​athematics, YRDSB continued to:

  • Outperform Ontario on all measures

  • Be a top-performing Board in most measures

  • Have an area of need in supporting our students who have special education needs

  • Have an area of need in supporting students who take Grade 9 Applied Mathematics
