Accessing Intervenor Services for Individuals who are Deafblind

Planning for adult services can feel overwhelming. This page provides an overview of intervenor services for individuals who are Deafblind.

What is an Intervenor?

An intervenor is a specially trained professional who supports individuals who are Deafblind in accessing communication, information and their environment. Intervenors use individualized strategies based on a person’s unique hearing, vision, communication, sensory and access needs.

Intervenor services may support:

  • communication and interaction
  • access to environmental information
  • community participation
  • daily living and independence
  • orientation and mobility
  • educational, residential and community environments

Intervenor services are designed to support accessibility, participation, independence and quality of life.

Access Intervenor Services (AIS)

Access Intervenor Services (AIS) guides adults who are Deafblind across Ontario through the application process for Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services (MCCSS) funded intervenor services.

AIS was developed by the Deafblind Network of Ontario (DBNO) in partnership with MCCSS.

The application process can begin when a student is 17.5 years old (six months before their 18th birthday). Applicants are required to meet eligibility criteria outlined on the AIS website.  It is important that you review this criteria before applying, including what documents you will need to apply.

How to Apply

Individuals interested in accessing intervenor services can begin the application process through Access Intervenor Services (AIS).

Planning Ahead
