Message from the Director of Education
Over the past year, the York Region District School Board has strengthened its commitment to student learning by investing in resources that enhance classroom instruction and program delivery. This commitment has guided and shaped what we do every day and played a key role in our achievements.
One focus of our work is expanding classroom-based supports to better meet the diverse learning needs of YRDSB students. YRDSB has increased the number of Empower Reading Teachers, strengthened primary literacy instruction and added Math Facilitators across the district. These efforts aligned classroom support with student needs and helped build important foundational skills.
We also continued to focus on building healthier, safer and more inclusive learning environments. Savings from technology efficiencies were reinvested in additional social workers, occupational therapists and speech language pathologists to better support student well-being. Investments in security and emergency response infrastructure improved school safety. Together, these investments helped create safer schools and contributed to student well-being and achievement.
YRDB students continue to perform above average in provincial testing. Students in Grades 3 and 6 exceeded provincial results in reading, writing, and mathematics, while secondary students also showed strong outcomes, including higher than average results on the Grade 9 mathematics assessment and the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test. These results reflect the ongoing focus of the Board’s Multi Year Strategic Plan and District Action Plan on student achievement, well-being and inclusion, as well as the efforts of students, staff, families, and community partners to support learning and success for all students.
These are just some of the accomplishments of YRDSB students and staff. I encourage you to explore the rest of the Annual Report and visit our website or social media channels to learn more about the work happening across YRDSB.
Sincerely,
Bill Cober
Director of Education
