Curriculum & Instructional Services

The goal of the York Region District School Board is to offer students program delivery that is relevant, dynamic and engaging in order to prepare them for full participation in an interconnected and changing world community. The priorities of the Board include the acquisition of strong foundational literacy and numeracy skills as well as developing the critical skills of effective communication, digital literacy, inquiry and problem solving. The development of learning skills and positive attitudes towards learning is integrated into curriculum delivery.

The Ontario Curriculum affords staff many opportunities to design learning so that students learn how to work collaboratively and develop skills as creative and critical thinkers who are able to express themselves well. Curriculum is an important vehicle for students to learn content knowledge as well as more about themselves, each other and the world in which they live. Significant elements of our overall Literacy frame underpin the delivery of the Ontario Curriculum in York Region Schools.

These include:

  • Commitment to being part of a collaborative that learns together

  • Planning that is purposeful and monitored on a regular cycle

  • Assessment practices that are of high quality and are used to inform instruction

  • Engagement of students in their learning, as partners in the process

  • Instruction that is precise and personalized

  • Relationships that are positive between students, staff, families and the community
