Summer Co-op Programs

This program has an early registration deadline. Applications will open on February 14, 2025 at 9:00AM and close on February 24, 2025  at 4:00PM.

The SHSM Summer Co-op Program is for SHSM students in the Health & Wellness or Business sectors (for non-clinical positions), interested in working at Mackenzie Health/Cortellucci Hospital or Scarborough Health Network. Students are eligible to earn two Cooperative Education credits while developing skills and gaining experience in the Health & Wellness or Business SHSM Sectors. Students will participate in virtual and in-person learning with their Co-op teacher and gain work experience at either the Mackenzie Health/Cortellucci or Scarborough Health Network.

Application is limited to SHSM students entering Grade 12 who could not schedule Co-op into their regular timetables. Not all applicants will be contacted for interviews. This program is being offered in collaboration with YRDSB and YCDSB.

Students must be available for all scheduled dates.

Mackenzie Health Hospital

The program structure below is for both YCDSB and YRDSB students.

The SHSM 2-credit summer co-op program is a blended learning model running from May 6, 2025 to August 1, 2025. Pre-placement classes will take place in-person and virtually from 5:00-9:00 pm. In-person classes will take place at Richmond Green Secondary School at 1 William F. Bell Pkwy, Richmond Hill, ON L4S 2T9.

Students placed with Mackenzie Health Hospital must complete a MANDATORY two-week  volunteer component at Mackenzie Health Hospital from August 5th to August 18th, 2025.

Program Dates

Pre-Placement: May 6 (5-9 pm in person @ RGSS), May 13 (5-9 pm virtual), May 20 (5-9 pm virtual), May 27 (5-9 pm virtual), June 3 (5-9 pm virtual), June 10 (5-9 pm virtual), June 17 (5-9 pm in person @ RGSS), June 26 (5-9 pm virtual)

Integration: Dates and location to be determined.

Placement: July 2 -  August 1 (approximately 40 hours/week, Monday to Friday)

Volunteer Dates: August 5 - August 18

Scarborough Health Network

YRDSB students

Scarborough Health Network program will follow the same structure as the Mackenzie Health Hospital above.

YCDSB students

The Scarborough Healthy Network 2-credit summer co-op program is a blended learning model running from May 14, 2025 to August 1, 2025. Pre-placement classes will take place in-person and virtually on Wednesdays and Saturdays. In-person classes will take place at Our Lady Queen of The World, 10475 Bayview Ave, Richmond Hill, ON L4C 3P2. The dates below are tentative and subject to change.

YCDSB Program Dates

Pre-Placement: May 14 (4 - 7 pm Google Meet), May 21 (4 - 7 pm Google Meet), May 24 (9 am - 1 pm in person @ OLQW), May 28 (4 - 7 pm Google Meet), June 4 (4 - 7 pm Google Meet), June 7 (9 am - 1 pm in person @ OLQW)

Integration: July 18 (8:30am - 2:30pm in person @ OLQW), August 1 (8:30am - 12pm in person @ OLQW)

Placement: July 2 - July 31 (8:30am - 5pm, Monday to Friday)

Please note registration does not guarantee a space. This centralized placement is competitive, with a limited number of placements available.

2-credit co-op is available to students in Grades 10–12 interested in a work experience. Students will participate in remote/in-person learning (see schedule below) and in-person/virtual Co-op placements in their community during July.

The 2-credit summer co-op program is a blended learning model running from May 6, 2025 to August 1, 2025. Pre-placement classes will take place in-person and virtually from 5:00-9:00 pm. In-person classes will take place at Richmond Green Secondary School at 1 William F. Bell Pkwy, Richmond Hill, ON L4S 2T9.

Students entering Grade 11 and Grade 12 may apply.

Students must be available for all scheduled dates.

All student applicants will be notified after the deadline on next steps before the start of the program.

*Students who are applying to the SHSM 2-Credit Co-op for Mackenzie Health/Cortellucci Hospital or Scarborough Health Network do not need to apply again for the regular 2 Credit Co-op. If students are not successful in securing a placement with the hospital, they will be automatically considered for the regular 2-Credit Co-op.

One Credit ALEP is available to students in grades 10–12 interested in earning a credit in July through a paid placement. Students will participate in remote/in-person learning and will be required to have a full-time job for July. Employers must meet with the summer ALEP teacher for a placement assessment before students are accepted into the program.
