The Every Student Counts Survey is a student census that was conducted in late 2018 in every school across the York Region District School Board. Over 126,000 survey invitations or survey packages were sent to families of Kindergarten to Grade 6 students and Grades 7 to 12 students.
In 2020, the Overall Board Results were released:
- Every Student Counts Survey – Overall Board Report
- Every Student Counts Survey Infographic (Accessible)
- Every Student Counts Survey Infographic (Print version)
- Public data set from the ESCS (Excel spreadsheet)
During the summer and winter of 2021, data from the Every Student Counts Survey will be released in a series of themed research reports. The Board has been working closely with the community to understand their needs and to co-create themed research studies and evaluation solutions that are inclusive, relevant, meaningful and actionable.

About the Every Student Counts Survey
The purpose of the ESCS is to better understand our students’ identities as well as their experiences inside and outside of school. ESCS results will be used to inform Board and school improvement planning that aims to:
identify and eliminate systemic barriers to student success
create more equitable and inclusive school environments
improve student achievement and well-being
Findings from the ESCS will be used to develop strategies and realign supports to where they are needed the most. As outlined in YRDSB’s Equity Action Plan, this work will be guided by an anti-oppression framework. The Board and staff members will engage in developing their critical consciousness to gain awareness of bias in order to intentionally identify, interrupt and eliminate discriminatory practices and systemic barriers from schools and classrooms to support student achievement and well-being.
Additional information about the survey is available on the ESCS Frequently Asked Questions webpage.
