Advanced Placement (AP)

Advanced Placement (AP) courses give students the opportunity to study university‑level content while still in high school. These academically challenging courses are designed to provide background knowledge and skills equivalent to a first‑year university course and offer enriched, intensive learning in subjects of interest and strength.

AP courses are recognized internationally and are developed by the College Board, an organization that creates AP curriculum and administers standardized AP exams each year.

They are typically offered at the Grade 12 level, though preparation may begin earlier depending on the school.

What does the course look like?

Curriculum and Assessment

Students in AP courses learn both Ontario curriculum expectations and AP‑specific content.

Ontario Curriculum Content

The student’s final mark in the course is based on their knowledge of the Ontario curriculum. This is the mark that will appear on your transcript. This is assessed and evaluated by your classroom teacher.

AP Content

Students are evaluated on the AP content by completing a standardized AP exam (written annually in May). The results of this exam do not affect the Ontario course mark.

Students can send their AP scores to post-secondary institutions if they choose. Based on your performance on the exam, you may earn a transfer credit, advanced placement or both for university.

Each university or college independently decides how AP exam results are recognized. Students are encouraged to review the AP policies of the institutions they are interested in applying to.

What are the benefits?

Taking AP courses and exams can:

  • Provide early exposure to university‑level learning.
  • Help students develop skills that support success in post‑secondary education.
  • Allow students to earn university credit, depending on exam results and institutional policy.
  • Demonstrate academic readiness and motivation to post‑secondary institution.
