High Performance Athlete Support

School Support for High‑Level Sport: Experience the High Performance Athlete Program

The High Performance Athlete (HPA) Program is designed for students who compete at the provincial, national or international level in eligible sports and whose training and competition schedules regularly conflict with traditional school timetables.

The program provides timetable support so student athletes can continue to train and compete at a high level while continuing to earn their Ontario Secondary School Diploma

Students may be eligible to enrol in up to two Day School Online Courses during the school year.

What are the benefits of HPA?

The program enables student athletes to continue to train and compete at a high level while maintaining academic progress towards graduation.

Who is HPA for?

Students in Grades 9 to 12 may apply to be considered for the program if they meet all of the following criteria:

  1. Compete in a qualifying sport* at the provincial, national or international level.
  2. Must attend their regular training and compete during times that would typically conflict with otherwise-regular academic programming.
  3. Train under the supervision of a certified coach (not a parent/guardian).
  4. Train a minimum of 15 hours per week.
  5. Complete required documents (YRDSB High Performance Athlete Application Form and Provincial or National Sport Verification Letter)

Please note: Students must reapply for the program each year using the High Performance Athlete Program Renewal Form.

*Please speak to your school for qualifying sports.

Where is HPA offered?

HPA is offered by all secondary schools in York Region District School Board.

How and when do I apply?

Students who are interested in being considered for the HPA program must submit the YRDSB High Performance Athlete Application Form and the Provincial or National Sport Verification Letter to their secondary school by the deadline.
